3.5 AVERAGE

It kept me interested in reading it, but after I was done, not sure that it was that great. A bit on the spooky side.

A good, quick read, but the ending was a little too neat. A fun little "ghost story" nonetheless.

I was so looking forward to this book after much hype. However I found the writing stilted and the storyline boring. I put it down so many times that I struggled to pick it up. Sorry team I feel like I've let all the lovers down!

Good and creepy for an afternoon spent on the couch! Better if you believe in ghosts; just sayin'.

Went into it almost halfway and still stagnant. Heard great things about the author but this book just didn’t have a good hook to get you!

I got frustrated with the main character a bit for little things. Then I started liking more and wondering how they were going to wrap some things up. But then they were lazy with the over all ending.

3.75. My quest to read all Jennifer McMahon’s works continues. This was her debut and if I had read it in 2007, I think it would have been just about a five star read. Like all her works, both timelines are engaging and she creates characters to root for as you wind through her twists and turns. Where I think this entry falls a bit short is the balance between a realistic serial killer thriller and a ghost story. What I’ve come to love about McMahon is the heart in her stories and the crafty balance of genres. This falls more into the thriller aspect which means it needs to nail the plot. Unfortunately, there’s a bit of hand waving around some plot holes at the end. The ghost story, and the central relationship between the main character and said ghost, should have been the heart of the thing, but falls short of its potential. Still a worthy starting point for anyone getting into McMahon’s works.

This book was a page turner! I really enjoyed it. It was told in two different time periods but McMahon did a great job tying it together. I gave it 4 stars because I guessed who the killer was. There were a few times I was not sure, and it kept me guessing. There was a paranomal feeling to the book which I loved! For a debut novel, this was amazing! I am adding all of her books to my TBR ASAP!

Kate returns to rural Vermont to make decisions about her mother whose Alzheimer's has reached a dangerous stage. On the day she arrives, a girl is murdered in a manner eerily similar to the way a friend of Kate's was killed 30 years ago. Del, nicknamed the Potato Girl because of her poor farming family upbringing, seems to have a hold on Kate's mother and Opal, a friend of the murdered girl. Is she coming back for revenge?

The author maintains a creepy feeling throughout, delving into the character of Del through Kate's flashbacks and dropping hints about Del's murder. The touches of horror and the paranormal may put off some mystery readers. A cleanly-written story with interesting characters and a quick pace.
