Whatever you experienced in the first book, amp up 10 times that so be prepared! Pay attention to the content warnings as there are many things that could be triggering or disturbing. This one was not as good as the first, and the character persepectives really became repetitive. But overall it was a crazy adventure towards greatness, tons of political intrigue, and perserverance despite insurrmountable odds! And war, a lot of war.

Great characters that provide good starting points for really interesting conversations about intersections of gender, religious and cultural expectations, class, and the damage misogyny does to everyone.

I liked this one better than SWBTS because it had less of a story telling style I dislike, though it came back toward the end, especially with Baoxiang. I dislike when the narrator in books (and tv shows, movies) knows more than the reader. It feels like a cheap and lazy way to create suspense. It is a testament to how much I liked SWBTS that I kept reading it with that (imho) flaw. The story premise, characters, and setting I absolutely love.

The Zhu and Ouyang working together chapters were so fun and entertaining. Such interesting characters to compare and contrast! It did start to feel like Ouyang was becoming too OP, but it fit the story.

The death of Madame Zhang was sad. Zhu looks down on her for using marriage and men in her life to gain power, which is not the route Zhu took to gain power. Zhu’s internalized misogyny felt real. That shit is complicated. Zhu’s goal wasn’t gender and marriage equality and people missing hands can now enter temples. It was I want my side to win, and I will have glory forever. And I’ll do anything to achieve that. And she did.

As in the first book, I felt like I was missing some things because I don’t know that much about China, Mongolia, Buddhism, and all the cultural norms and history there in. Once I did a bunch of Wikipedia reading and I realized these characters are based on real people (on Zhu and Ma’s side mostly), I got even more into it.

At first, I found Baoxiang’s chapters boring, but I appreciated them more later on.

After I finished SWBTS, one of the things I was hoping for in this book was a Zhu/Ma kissing scene. I did not get it. RIP Xu Da. RIP Third Prince.

There are many more trigger warnings to add to this book compared to the first one.

I’m giving this a 4 for the quality of the writing, characterization, and the political intrigue. I love morally grey characters but my goodness these characters were too morally grey for me.
We hit the second child murder in the series and the violent rape scene and it was just… a lot.
I also think for all the horrible things the characters did and experienced the author could’ve leaned further into an ambiguous ending, it felt a little like the last 5 pages transferred from a more traditional happy ending after 400 pages of plotting and intrigue. Lot of trigger warnings in this one, so definitely believe those. I wanted to like the characters more than I did. If you’re really into political intrigue and like an immoral (or amoral) protagonist then you’ll like it. Normally I support gay rights and gay wrongs but this is a few too many gay wrongs for me, personally. Also… everyone is super into using sex to get what they want.

If there had been slightly fewer moments meriting a content warning it would've been 5 stars for me, so maybe it will be for you. But yeah - I think it ticked more content warnings than it didn't, so, at your own risk.

this was a heavyyyyy read. My goodness. So incredibly complex and moving, much like the first book. There is so much to say - I’ll be processing it for a few days I think. Also def read content warnings beforehand if needed

A bittersweet end to the duology. These books look at gender and the human experience of it in a way that has left me feeling exposed and crying. In a good way though.
