3.5 basically loved the characters and how complex they were but somehow in places it all just felt repetitive or fell flat for some reason idk but still a great plot and range of characters
Did Shelley Parker-Chan pull it off? I don’t quite know.

Interesting alternate history, queer (something which would be debatable on if even possible or not in actual history from that era) take on post Mongol rule China. Very complex, political intrigue akin to the era going on.
UGH. An amazing end to the duology. The characters are so terrible and beautiful and multifaceted. This book just grips your heart in a stranglehold and stares you down. The gentle approach to shame surrounding internalized homophobia and gender identity is unlike anything I’ve ever read and so appreciated. Thank you SPC.

This was a little weaker for me than the first book. Just like with that one, however, I feel like a reread would improve the experience. The ending lost me a bit because I feel like the author shied away at the last minute, but overall a great duology.
