Thoroughly enjoyed this duology.

Overall, I did find book 2 to be a slower pace than book 1, and unfortunately the political intrigue during the first half didn't hit as well as book 1 for me either. But the 2nd half of the book did pick up tremendously and I really enjoyed the ending.

Where do I start!!!! This was an emotional roller coaster ride, goddamn!! I can't tell if I'm just misremembering the first book now, but I'd consider this second book perhaps darker* than the first. I suppose it makes sense with the fact that this book incorporates the POVs of other characters which we hadn't followed much before.

I am always amazed at how well Shelley Parker Chan writes. Even the smallest characters can be envisioned so clearly. Our main characters are so complex and despite all that they've done you still admire them or feel for them. I think this book pulled me closer to General Ouyang more than ever.

As always, I fall in love with Shelley Parker Chans beautiful language, and every tiny bit of historical significance or detail that is laced into this story. Even after all this time has passed since I read the first novel, as soon as I began chapter one of He Who Drowned the World I was transported back to China in 1356 almost instantly.

There's always a lot of plotting and planning in this duology but I have never found that an issue. While longer than the first book it was still well paced, and without realising it, I got through it surprisingly quickly.

Finally the ending!!!! Just like the first book I cried!!! These characters have moved me so deeply, in ways I could never explain as well as this author can, that I am always brought to tears by the end of it. (And sometimes midway through.... like I said it was an emotional rollercoaster okay).

Ahhh I encourage you all to read this duology, for it has left a remarkable impact on me. It is story so unique and moving, one that you will never forget!!!

*Though for any readers who are uncomfortable with any topics, make sure to check the content warnings because while I am not usually concerned by much, I noticed some themes were very heavy and consistent throughout the book.

dark tense
