I really liked this book more as a stand alone than a prequel/villain origin story to Six Crimson Cranes. Channi was pretty much the only character that I cared about. Every one else was either a one trick pony or a villain. I read this after the first book but not the second book so maybe so of the references I just didn't get.

I feel like I could see how the plot would unfold. Which I think I’m fine with. But I just didn’t care.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would but it certainly had its ups and downs. While the protagonist, Channi, was fierce and bold she seemed less mature than a 19-year-old and her narrative got really slow and dull towards the end. I also didn't like Hokzuh's character or addition in this story. At times I also got bored with hearing about Vanna's beauty, the repetition of some things and the connection and storytelling in this book just didn't feel enough and very simplistic. I felt disconnected to the plot, considering I already knew what was going to happen in the end but I loved the sisterly bond that Vanna and Channi had. They both cared for each other very deeply despite Channi having a good reason to resent her sister. Overall 2.75 stars because I wouldn't exactly recommend this to fans of the Six Crimson Cranes (I loved that book) because this was a bit of a letdown.
