So many words, so little said

Unfortunately, I did not make a review as soon as I finished the book, so, you’ll have to do with my vague impressions on a book I read (and finished) three months ago.

I am trying my best, but sometimes, life gets in the way *sigh*

Straight out of the bat, I can say that I’ll be reading the second book. The authors laid down the ground for some serious emotional damage and I’ll make sure to be there for it.

It’s quite a big book that follows different POVs, and only the fact that I succeeded to finish it and not feel like paddling through mud while reading, speaks of these authors’ skill level and capacity to breathe life into a multi-layered story.

The characters, also, felt alive and three-dimensional, like I could recognize each one of them individually, without having to follow too closely the “she/he/they said” dialogue tags, for example.

Maybe a bit more editing would have helped – there are some parts in which the story seems to stagnate or there are patches with a bunch of informational dumps which could have been cut out. But, alas, I do understand that this is the first book in a series with an intricate world, so there are a lot of explanations to be done.

This was REALLY entertaining. It reminded me a lot of Aladdin with the cheekiness of The Princess Bride. It felt like there was more to it so I’m hoping theres a sequel coming.

DID NOT FINISH

I don’t know why I expected to like this since I could t get all the way through zodiac academy either but this was way too long and way too boring

I have read a plethora of retellings in various forms, some staying true to the original and some doing their own thing, but not all of them my cup of tea. This book, however, took a concept and ran away with it, creating a wonderful ideal of all things Osaria and really making you go through a whole range of emotions on the characters behalf. I am ready for the next installment already, it's truly incredible!

Also, now listening to it on Audible to hear it being brought to life!

I am a full on twisted sisters Stan, but this book is probably my least favorite of their releases so far. That’s not to say that it isn’t good, because there are definitely things I enjoyed and I’ll be reading the next book in the series for sure.

The main issue for me was definitely the pacing. Considering this is the first book in a fantasy series, this book is long (900 pages +/- on kindle) and the beginning was very slow. I felt like the first 15-20% took me forever to read because I kept getting bored with it. I ended up switching to the audiobook and that helped me get over the hump, but I didn’t truly feel invested in the book until nearly 50%.

Per usual, I love the characters these authors create. Drake and Cassius’ budding bromance was fun to watch and Kyra’s unintended chaos was hilarious. I don’t feel like we know enough about Austyn to have connected with her on the same level that we did with the other characters, but I’m hoping we get to explore her character more in the next book.

There is a cliff-hanger, but on the twisted sisters scale, it’s pretty mild.

Kindle, KU | This book took me foreverrrr to read. I almost DNF. But I felt committed to the authors and was just dissatisfied. I miss ZA. This book was not gripping, the ending was disappointing, etc. there were moments of great potential but then that plot point would just disappear.

Too damn long but not so bad, interesting enough..
I liked the concept of the book and it had a lot of promise, but I think it dragged on (it took hundreds of pages to even meet the genie). The characters also varied from annoying to barely present, though there is soem potential there.
I will probably still read the sequel (once it doesn’t turn into a series longer than 2 books, which it is likely to)
