Stunning story.
Wow, the one was an epic tale, full of deceit, love and betrayal. Amazing characters and stunning storyline, there has to be more to this story!

It took some time for me to get into the story but once I did I couldn’t put my kindle down. I was cheering for Cassius and Drake. Drake tattoos left me curious and was happy once they were explained. Kyra is a great character too. I loved everything about the princess. Overall, I would say it’s a good book.
I liked this book, but it doesn't compare to the early books of ZA. It started off really slow to me because I Kyra is by FAR the most interesting character (and she doesn't come in until 250 pages in) I fell in love with her in the prequel and even though this new version doesn't compare she's still the best character. She gives me Keyla from Four Psychos vibes (kinda overwhelmed by everything but incredibly powerful and hopefully ruthless). I wasn't as amazed by the other characters. They were enjoyable but nothing crazy.
The ending of Drake betraying Kyra and Cass bonding with the dragon was a bit odd for me. I didn't hate it or love it. I am not all that excited for the curse element if I'm being honest. I also don't know how I feel about Austyn. I like her romance with Cass but other than that she isn't that engaging. I always liked Drake and Kyra's POV chapters the best.
Overall the world has a lot of potential. The prequel drew me in SO MUCH. I want to see more with the characters and the romances going forward. I'll definitely still read the next books, but I'm not overly crushed by the cliffhanger.

If these two write a fantasy, I’ll devour it. If you’ve read their other books, forget them. This is a completely new world with new characters and is a dark Alladin retelling.
Princess Austyn is a princess hidden by a veil and slave to traditions. When her guard, Cassius, accidentally sees her without her veil, he’s sentenced to death, But the evil empress offers him a chance at freedom if he finds a hidden treasure for her. Drake is a street thief who would be mad to refuse the idea of a fortune when he and Cassius end up in the palace dungeon together after Cassius refused the empress’ offer.
The pair embark on a journey to find a magical treasure that will lead them to a larger adventure.
What I loved…
The grumpy sunshine friendship between the two MMCs was top-notch. They’re complete opposites but make a hilarious duo.
Whatever you expect for the genie… I doubt you’re prepared for Kyra. She’s a fun take on the lovable character and my favourite.
Princess Austyn knows her own mind from the start but is a prisoner of her own gender and has no power to make the changes she wants. But she has a little fun doing it sometimes.
What I didn’t like…
I struggled a few times during the first half of the book. I think that could have been seriously condensed. The fun banter between Drake and Cassius made it worth it.
Final thoughts…
Another book from the twisted sisters to make me laugh and cry and scream and sigh along with the characters. And if you’re scared based off their other series, you should be.

If you are a fan of the sisters’ writing you’ll enjoy this book. It has all their wit and humor we all love firmly in place. This got 3 stars because I feel like it could have been about 150-200 pages shorter. The story felt like it came to a very natural climax and cliffhanger to start off the next book… and then kept going. Still ends on a huge cliffhanger (as is the way of the sisters) and I did enjoy the story and the characters, it just felt like too much of the same things being said over and over again which made me start skimming whole sections that felt irrelevant. Will I read the next book? Of course! I’d like to see some more of that spice the sisters are known for in the next books as this one definitely had a YA, slow burn vibe.
Side note - if you read the novella (A Kingdom of Gods and Ruin) you can skip almost all of Kyras chapters in the beginning…not saying you *should* skip them, but I definitely skimmed quickly because they’re nearly word for word the novella.

Great start to another epic series. It definitely kept me on my toes - so many twists and turns I almost got dizzy. Do not try to guess the next move on this one, just buckle in and enjoy the ride!

2.5-3 ⭐️’s: It was a struggle to get through this one. I will probably not continue the series but then again I might. I didn’t like any of the characters and had no investment whatsoever in what happened to them. I really really enjoyed the prequel so this was a disappointment.
