Eliot's classic was slower than I expected at first -- a meandering and lovely meditation on childhood. As the last portion began, though, the current of the story picked up for a fast-paced, emotional -- and genuinely fascinating -- finish.

Did not like how that ended...

I have about as many problems with this book as I do things that surprised me. The issues/critiques are what I expected, but I was impressed by the positive surprises I found in this book. If I am remaining positive, what I like most about this book is that elements of it feel quite timeless. Stephen and Philip, we have all ran into them and people like them were the exact same back then as they are now. Fuckboys are timeless, unfortunately. But, Maggie's messiness and internal struggle to care about herself and her wants/needs as much as others when she had never, even in childhood, been encouraged to do so. Overall, I quite liked it and it really picked up toward the end.

If someone ever makes a modern adaptation/retelling of this story yall will freak, trust.

loved the philosophical language and strong female character of Maggie but it did make me want to bash my head against a wall !!! ffs it got so boring at times I was ready to jump out my window

Maggie is such a fully realised, frustrating, and loveable heroine, and Eliot created such a cosy sense of place & home.

Just finished. I can’t speak on the ending. I can’t even move. I’m mad. Also, this is my favorite novel.

I'm very much a Romantic, and I'm growing more and more in touch with my emotions because of it. The events in this novel spoke to me. I felt so much anguish, joy, sorrow, anger, and I chalk that up to good writing. Ending was a shocker. Needless to say, my book is tear-stained.

What a pleasure this book was. Oh Maggie you're such an annoying but endearing thing why didn't you just marry the gorgeous Stephen, you had to let your silly morals get in the way and don't we love you for it in the end. I was captivated to see how it could ever end and would my longing for Maggie and Stephen to be together be satiated or not, you'll have to read it to find out.
