If I had read this book as a child it would have been my whole personality for a few years I can tell you that. Maggie as a character is so great; a perfect portrait of a girl whose emotions are too big for her body. The ending was so surprising, and broke my heart.
I did not enjoy this nearly as much as I enjoyed Middlemarch and Adam Bede, both of which I have recently read. This one dragged on and on--I put it aside several times--in large part because I could not find any of the characters to be very sympathetic. The main character, Maggie, is surrounded by manipulative, hard, unforgiving, unkind men on the one hand and whinging, self-centered, needy men on the other. I couldn't wish for her to appease any of them. The fact that her main desire was to appease her nasty brother made the whole story go down hard. Can't say I recommend this one.

My first by Eliot, and I do enjoy her writing quite a bit. I wish this had been happier, but the characters are still excellently drawn and believable.
