Enid Blyton wows me again! The book was the perfect example of a cozy mystery. Set in an abandoned castle, the book takes you on an escapist adventure

I used to read a lot of Enid Blyton as a child and I've decided to go back and revisit them! I do remember reading this series but I don't think I read many of them, not this one anyway I don't think. I think this is my favourite series out of the sort of childrens' mystery genre. I loved this one! It just puts a smile on my face and really look forward to picking it up. I can't wait to read more of this series.

I absolutely loved this series as a kid, although even then I found the rigid gender roles infuriating. These days I'm also aware of the class and privilege, while the portrayal of local gypsy girl Tassie leaves a modern reader wide-eyed.

With so much excellent modern children's fiction available, this is best left as a nostalgic romp for us readers of a certain age.

The Castle Of Adventure - Enid Blyton

This is the second of Enid Blyton’s ‘Adventure’ series, published two years after the first outing for Jack, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and of course, Kiki the Parrot. As in the first book, The Island of Adventure, the Castle of Adventure finds the children almost falling into a mystery from the very beginning and it just gets better and better from then on.

This book introduces Philip and Dinah’s mother, Mrs Mannering, who takes the four children to a remote cottage for their school holidays. And not far from where they’re staying, the children are thrilled to find an old partly-ruined castle.

Why are the local people reluctant to talk about it? And what’s the story behind flashing lights seen coming from one of the towers in the castle.

Jack, of course, is mad about birds and having seen a great auk fly up from within the castle, he decides to camp up inside the castle walls one night to take photos of the birds. But is someone else up there inside the castle?

Policeman Bill Smugs reappears and warns the children not to go into the castle again. But predictably, they pay no heed to his warning and that’s when it all starts to go wrong. However, Kiki comes into her own again, as she does in all the books, bringing a small slice of humour to the tale

You’ll love this book. It’s a brilliant read, with a great storm like no other, mixed in with suits of armour that move in the night, plus hidden rooms and gloomy underground passages. The Castle of Adventure is a story that children of all ages will remember for ever.

One of my childhood favourites, I have always loved Enid Blyton and the Adventure series has always been a great fave of mine. I don't know how many times I have re-read these over the years but even as an adult I go back and re-read them once in a while. Reliving childhood innocence I suppose.
These are of course light and easy reads, the children are fun and curious people who find adventures where ever they go.
I sometimes wish that Enid has written more thoroughly on Bill and Mrs Mannering over the years but we do get some lovely hints through the series of growth for them.
Very much recommended to young readers and for all those like me who wish to relive their childhood.

28 April 2018: Listened to audiobook version, narrated nicely and told rather excitingly, took me back to my youth.
