Atwood has done a marvellous job of responding to the fall of Gilead, plus incorporating societal changes within the last 35 years. It’s captivating how involved you feel as a reader.

Infinitely more terrifying than the first book and a must read for any fans of the original story. Whereas Offred has a before and after perspective that analyzes the descent into fascism this book provides our first real look at the indoctrination process of Gilead ideals and how the life of women is supposed to function starting at a young age. There’s also significantly more interaction between the characters since they’re not isolated like the handmaid’s, which makes the eventual converging of the three storylines only that much more exciting. I loved all three perspectives, but was especially taken by Agnes Jemima and her bond with her school friend Becca. The first book is amazing and serves as a huge landmark in literature but I personally found this one to be more interesting, better paced, sadder, scarier, and more action packed. A triumph.
