“Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Sense and Sensibility” follows the two Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, and their opposing views of life and love after their father’s death causes them to step down in society.

I found myself comparing this novel a lot with itself. It’s hard not to. There are so many unlikeable or ridiculous characters that can be easily compared with more sensible ones. Obviously you’re supposed to compare Elinor and Marianne to each other, but I also found myself comparing them to Austen and her sister, Cassandra, and their lives after the death of their own father.

For me, I think this novel shines when discussing society and the actions of its characters and the motive behind their actions. Greed, performance and passions of the heart drive this novel and I really appreciated the commentary in it.

As for the romance—Marianne will never deserve Colonel Brandon. I don’t care. That man deserves so much more than her. And yes, I understand that she’s 17, but I don’t care. She will never deserve him. I don’t think any woman could. I don’t have much criticism for Edward because his actions are completely justified and understandable. He did what he did out of duty and I forgive him for it. I also appreciate that most of the people get their just desserts by the end of the novel and over all, it wasn’t a bad read.

Now to finally watch the 1995 film.

Since i recently started listening to a podcast about Jane Austen's books, I decided to read this book again and listened to an audio version. It was a great delight. It made me realize what a good job Emma Thompson did in her adaptation of the book.

Listened to it again finished March 14. Enjoyed yet again.

i think, objectively, this is jane austen at her best. it combines all the strongest elements of her writing—satire, melodrama, compelling characters, sarcasm, romance—into a masterwork. personally, pride and prejudice is still my favorite of her works, yet i can’t help but marvel at her talents on display in sense and sensibility. i found myself empathizing with both elinor, as the eldest daughter, and marianne, as a romantic idealist at heart. jane austen, they could never make me hate you.
