I feel as though there wasnt a whole lot of build up at first. I also thought Gemma was super annoying for while too. I'm always disappointed when people dont know history and for her not to know anything and then come to earth, it's frustrating to read. I feel as though those things would be something to know. When you go to earth you should expect to know things that would be rusting, and decaying around you and know what they are.
Besides that, the story did get better. I only give it three stars cause I didn't really like how it starts out.

I wasn’t a fan of the romantic pacing of the book, or development of the FMC & MMC, but overall 2 stars.
The universe was unique and the supporting characters are intriguing.

Hot. The FMC is stronger than I because I would have FOLDED. FOLDED LIKE A LAWN CHAIR.

I could not set this book down. What excellent world building! It is almost a romantic mystery in a way.
This is a version of post apocalyptic alien invasion earth with a very unique spin. The hero is every bit the possessive yet adoring alien romance hero. The heroine is mid thirties, a career woman, and dealt a crappy hand, but goes with it. It was very sexy, but I found myself skimming that to find out what was going to happen next! It has one of my favorite tropes- “one party is hurt/sick”.
All that being said- I do feel like a *trigger warning* is needed in that the first time is- depending on your comfort- borderline non-consensual, which I struggle with. He wears her down with bribery... and then I mean... she consented, but then said “it’s to much...” and tries to pull away multiple times... and he goes for it anyways. I’m a believer that no means no. Her body language and words were saying “wait- stop”, and he admits it will not be easy and then doesn’t wait for a response and does it anyways. I feel like sometimes we give leeway to alien heroes that we would not extend to human males. After this I really struggled with do I want to continue reading this story and ultimately decided to go for it. A lot of their sexual relations are written in a way that is more possessive, less consensual. I almost felt like there was a little Stockholm syndrome going on. So, that should be noted.
The remainder of the story was that of an obsessed alien male trying to keep his mate. He is sweet and sexy, super possessive and kind hearted, but I did feel quite often that Gemma didn’t really have a choice in the matter. I’m all for the alpha alien but I do tend to like it when they give the woman more of a choice vs making that choice for her. That is absolutely a personal thing though and I know not all romance is free and consensual.
This world and story is really smart and quite unique. I know I mention some concerns but as far as world building this was a very enjoyable place to escape and I absolutely look forward to reading the next one!
It took me 3 tries to get into it, but the moment that I got into it, I couldn't put it down.
Definitely fun and sexy plus it looks like we've got a mystery on our hands. This book leaves room for more adventures and stories from this world and I love it. Very fun read!
