This is a tough book to review. It is the story of a boy and his family in the months prior to the U.S. dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The family is poor and has sacrificed much for Japan despite being opposed to the war. They are malnourished and seem to encounter problems any time they have access to more food. Since the story is told through a seven year old boy, much of the horror is downplayed. But it is still there, particularly when soldiers are on stage and after the bomb drops.
The struggle of the Japanese people is front and center. Even the soldiers that volunteer for the war are affected. Gen's family is treated pretty harshly all around for speaking against the war. The only other character that is treated similarly is a Korean refugee. The tone and setting immediately made me think of the animated film Grave of the Fireflies and the novel Hiroshima. Both deal with the same subject, but those focus more on the aftermath. Since this is the first of a ten book series, Nakazawa will definitely cover that aspect.
The only thing I didn't care for in this book is the art. It fits very well with the protagonist, but it is too cartoony for my taste. It's not a make or break thing for me, but it can distract from the story being told.
Anyone interested in history, especially WWII, should check this out. But everyone should read something telling the story of this bombing. It is so much more striking to read a first hand account than to just be aware that it happened.

this is frankly the most gruesome and raw book/novel/manga i've ever read in my life.
barefoot gen is so visceral and raw and forces you to be sucked into the pain and depth of the emotions gen felt when losing his whole family. this was pure reality of the horrors the Japanese experienced with the atomic bomb: the skin sliding off, the burns, the screams, the guilt
it also raises the question: in the context of the war, are the Japanese perpetrators or victims? both, possibly.
nobody talks about the effects. the class issues. how defying wasn't an option for most ordinary citizens. it was to either die as a traitor or die as a loyal citizen - neither of which were appealing options.
the atomic bomb didn't happen in an instant. this was a lasting flame that spread throughout the city, devouring each humans' flesh and tearing them about. the horrors of the war are often forgotten, but this must be one that we remember.

An important manga/memoir about the horrors of atomic bombs. This first volume focuses more on the war before the bombing and Japan's intense Militarism and ends right after the bomb hits Hiroshima.

دائماً ما تدهشني قدرة الإنسان على التدمير، كيف استطاع هذا الكائن الضعيف أن يؤذي ويدمر ويحرق كل ما هو أخضر أو يابس في هذه الحياة، كيف استطاعت الرغبة في الإنتصار أن تصمم شيئاً بهذه البشاعة والقدرة على التدمير، كيف حدث ما قد حدث واستمر في الحدوث لسنوات متتالية بعد الحادثة.
هذه الرواية المصورة ركزت على عيوب اليابانيين في مرحلة الحرب وما قبل القنبلة وكيف كانت اختياراتهم هي سبب لنكبتهم، ولكنها لم تركز على الجريمة بشكل كبير، لم تركز على جرم الأمريكان الذي لا يمكن لشيء أن يشفع له.
عيب هذه ال manga الرئيسي هي الترجمة متوسطة الجودة، فكانت في بعض الأحيان لطيفة وفي البعض الآخر طفولية وغير سلسة.
أدركت سريعاً أن بعض عيوب الترجمة هذه ليست عيوباً، ولكنها نتيجة لكونها تنتمى لنوع مختلف من الأدب، له قواعده الغريبة خصوصاً في اختياراته للمؤثرات الصوتية وترجمة الأغاني، ولكنها كانت سيئة بشكل واضح في بعض الأجزاء حتى إن هذه الحجة لم تعد منطقية، فكان العيب هو عيب الترجمة بشكل رئيسي بلا أي مواربة.
في النصف الأول كانت تتكرر الأحداث بشكل رتيب، كلها دارت حول فكرة كره الأب للحرب وكيف بسبب رأيه هذا أصبح تعامل الجيران معهم مهين وكيف أثرت الحرب بشكل سيء على حياة اليابانيين، مشاهد قلة الطعام والجوع المستمر تكررت كل صفحتين تقريباً، فلو كانت رواية عادية لم أكن لأستطيع إكمالها ولكن طبيعتها كmanga جعلت المتعة أكبر لأن الصورة واختلافاتها بين الصفحة والأخرى كسرت رتابة الأحداث و تكرارها.
هذه هي تجربتي الأولى مع الأدب الياباني وفن المانجا بشكل عام، ولذلك الحكم قاصر.
فالكتاب جزء من عشرة، وهذه ما تزال البداية وانتهاء الأحداث بشكل مشوق جعلني أتشوق للقادم.
هي كقصة منفصلة، قصة متوسطة الجودة ولكن الجودة الحقيقية ومستوى الرواية المصورة الحقيقي سيظهر مع استمرار الأحداث في الأجزاء القادمة.

mucho se ha escrito sobre la bomba atómica en Japón, hay muchísimo material pero esta maravilla autobiográfica vale realmente la pena. Especialmente por el retrato que hace de los sobrevivientes, la situación de los coreanos que vivían en Japón y como se condujo el gobierno japonés con quienes eran pacifistas (como el padre del protagonista). Se hicieron dos películas de animación: Hadashi no Gen y Hadashi no Gen 2. Muy recomendable, en español se editaron 4 tomos por DeBolsillo.
