Am loving Highsmith’s tone and the last probably three chapters or so of this had me in suspense, not for what will happen but how.
dark mysterious tense fast-paced

I was going to make a comment about how Gillian Flynn wishes she'd written this first but my copy of Deep Water literally ends with an interview with Gillian Flynn about how she wishes she'd written this, it's literally 1950s Gone Girl
dark slow-paced

This is the first Highsmith I've read, and I did enjoy it. I chose her to be our author of the month at a local library, so I'm planning on reading a couple more of her novels this month. Deep Water is quietly sinister, and Highsmith does an excellent job of twisting and controlling the reader's perspective.
SpoilerI'm still puzzling over how she makes the audience root for a murderer.
.

I wanted to love this book, and read a nasty little domestic thriller. We can't always get what we want.

Not Patricia Highsmith making me root for a gaslighting, murdering MAN.

4.25. A very good vintage domestic thriller. In the words of Gillian Flynn, “no one writes sympathetic sociopaths as well as Patricia Highsmith”. What bumps it above a 4 is the excellent commentary on 50s societal transgressions.
