A book club good that I went through very quickly. Not my usual genre, but I enjoyed the descriptions of nature and found the story compelling. The representation of grief in this book really resonated with me. Even though I had no background knowledge about birds, the information on hawks and falconry was quite interesting!
A deeply moving book, this is a powerful and emotional story of grief, family, loneliness friendship. It's also a fabulous piece of nature writing, and a fascinating memoir. At some point I'll come back and talk more about this book, to suffice to say it will stick with me for a very long time.

I moving reflection on grief by Macdonald, who deals with the death of her father by deciding to train a goshawk. Highly recommend the audiobook narrated beautifully by Macdonald.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
I kept on picking this book up and putting it down for several weeks. Not a quick read by any means. Yet, it kept drawing me back. Beautifully written, original, it captures the feelings of the falconer after the loss of her father, but the comparison to White and his story, was often a stretch. The descriptions of the goshawk and the environment were compelling; one could see the eyes of the gos, and see the world through Mabel's eyes. Multifaceted, descriptive prose- worth the time spent to enjoy this book.

Every once in awhile I read an author that has such a strong style and voice that I find myself thinking in their voice. The writing in this book was beautiful and poetic--and strange--in the way Macdonald was able to bring to life the land and the hawk and the grief she felt for the death of her father. Fascinating reading about falconry a subject I knew very little about. Recommend.
Not as good as I thought it was going to be. I found it distracting that she kept delving into her fellow falconers story. I wanted her to focus more on her own story.
