Novik is such a masterful writer, surely one of the top 5 line-by-line authors in SFF today. Uprooted was completely different from His Majesty's Dragon, yet there was a bit of the captain in this story's Dragon.

I loved this. The world Novik created felt so real, and I became irrevocably attached to the characters. I couldn't decide if I wanted to read faster to find out what happened or read every page twice to soak up the magic of it all.

I have realized I am not a big fantasy reader. There was nothing wrong with this book, but it is not my type of book.

Loved this book!! Some sexytime scenes though very pro female. YA for sure.

I picked this up just because the title got me curious. I started reading this without much expectation and without really going deep into the synopsis. Don't worry, you'll understand the meaning of the title as you finish the book.

If you're looking for the traditional fantasy, this book is for you. Warlocks, witches, hard-to-pronounce incantations, potions, magical creatures, exorcism, illusions, necromancy, elemental magic, towers, kings, queens, prince, princess, Dragon (well, not really a dragon.. but... well, you'll understand when you read the book) - anything you may think a traditional fantasy story needs, you have it. But if you're looking for romance, look elsewhere. There is a subtle romance here, though it really isn't the center of the story. I felt it was a bit forced actually, so if you're looking for undying and/or passionate love, then you'd probably be disappointed.

I don't know how to properly describe the writing style. The word I would probably use is magical. There is an eerie, haunting, enchanting feeling while reading this... like it's putting me into a trance at some point. The way she explains the magical system is just vivid and it makes the reading experience felt real, yet magical.

Now you may be wondering why I gave it 3 star then, instead of a 4 or a 5? While I truly enjoy the writing style and the fantasy element, the story went a bit slow for me. The first part really got me hooked! There's this whole mystery and magical vibe at the beginning, which really makes you crave as a reader, and the eerie world the author has built really sets the mood. But it slowly lost its grip on me towards the middle. The story dragged on and it was a bit repetitive and I was just itching for it to be over. But that's just me. I'd probably re-read it some other time and ponder again about my decision.
