two stars because i did not like the weird sex scenes between the main character and his twin bffs. SO ODD. and because i need conclusion.

I could not put this down. I think because I had heard Rothman-Zecher speak, I could hear it in his voice and intonation. This is a a great read for students studying conflict in high school or college.

This story is an unfortunate reminder of the irrepressible gravitational forces that pull us apart no matter how much we might resist.

#26/2019 ... heartbreaking and beautiful...

I'd give the first 80% of this 4 stars, but the ending let me down. I think it tried to hard for a big dramatic reveal which just felt distracting and inconsistent with the rest of the novel. Otherwise it was interesting, nuanced, and had well developed characters.

This book could have been so good.  The story was amazing. The writing was awful. So crass.  And the ending???  What the hell was that?

highly recommend

it’s hard to describe how this novel made me feel. the ability of an author to take something considered  complex and tell a story with it, allowing the reader to examine many intricate perspectives that are so utterly human, is art in its most profound form.

the author not only centers this novel around the colonization and violence occurring against Palestinians, he also includes at the center a Jewish character who is preparing to serve in the Israeli army while forming a deep friendship and love with two Palestinian siblings. it’s moral struggle. it’s seeking to frame how we form our ideals, values, and identities. it’s a fictional narrative that offers the reader insight.

Absolutely stunning. Wonderful characters, plot, conflict, dialogue, and prose. Highly recommend. Also queer representation as well as hints of polyamory.

An excellent first novel that explores topics not often discussed in American fiction
