Had to return to the library

Another compelling, thoughtful novel by renowned author Thrity Umrigar - about adoption, race, and identity. Great for book groups! Read my full review for Shelf Awareness:

After reading this book I was left feeling like I wanted to find the writer and ask her if she even researched this topic. I don’t believe this book was well thought out at all. The story, while not original, was intriguing when I heard the review on NPR. Unfortunately I was terribly disappointed, as it seemed as if the writer only had a vague idea of what the story should be about, based only on what she has seen on tv. I cannot recommend this book, especially if you have done any work in the child welfare system.

The author is a very skilled writer and is one who can paint portraits and emotions through words. No one in this book seemed 2 dimensional and everything looks the way that she wants. The writing itself is fine, the story is good, but something about it just wasn't -it- for me and I'm not sure what it was. Realistically I would have given it a 3.5 instead, but that's not an option. It is a good book, but not necessarily one that I would read a second time.

This book sucked me in from the beginning and never let go.  It’s a very simple premise and story, but the questions about race, privilege, power and morality it asks are deep ones.  The book will have you questioning whether doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is justified, whether you can truly ever make up for injustice, and what you can forgive and what you can’t, even from the people you love.  Everyone one of the author’s books I’ve read so far has been worth it.
