I have found a new favorite! This book was absolutely incredible! Scary and unsettling with a fantastic prose and super atmospheric. This era is one that not many authors take on so I was so happy to see a book about this era AND it was horror. I felt like this book was written for me. Amazing. If you are a fan of horror pick up this book! a dark, creepy little gem!

I feel like I could not have read this at a worse (or better) time in some ways: a lot of the parallels definitely hit close to the current coronavirus pandemic and it's scary to compare. Horrorwise I did like the grisliness added throughout the book and enjoyed the descriptions for the most part. For some reason I preferred the first half to the second half (although enjoyed elements from both) and found the narrative to waffle a bit. The characters were okay and the plot decent enough, not bad and definitely a very relevant read at current time!

After a scary home invasion you move with your parents to a fortuitously inherited home in a little quaint village. The house is much fancier and sizeable and the prospect of a new school is promising. The only issue is the sickly looking girl at the bottom on the garden.

This is a melding of creepy ghost story, conspiracy and 14th century history. The latter being the time of the plague. Yeah, THAT plague.
I will say that the idea for the book was much stronger than the actual execution, but it still served as a good slow burn read.

I really see a lot of James Herbert in his style of writing and that for me is an absolute bonus. I feel like he takes an idea from folklore/history and uses that as a launchpad for building out the idea of his novels, which comes with obvious research that adds to the depth of the story.

As said, I feel the idea was better than the finished product and I would have liked to see a lot more from our Antagonist but as a whole it was an enjoyable read, especially if you are a fan of 70s/80s British horror books.

As the (inaccurate) saying goes, you’re never more than 6ft from a rat!
