Anne McCaffrey

4.15 AVERAGE

Love this series

Annual reread of one of my favorite books.

For my first encounter with McCaffrey, this was not bad. Nice short story (I listened to the unabridged audiobook) with enough depth to be interesting. I realize it's a "young adult" novel, which tempers my expectation for more mature themes and world political development, but it was enjoyable all the same.

Enjoyable book when read in context with the rest of the Pern universe. As is the case with the rest of the Pern books, none really have a lot of standalone value to me. Enjoyed the exploration of a new character in Menolly. Not as excited about her story as I am about Lessa and F'lar's story, but was an enjoyable quick read.

I love Menoly's story. Anne McCaffrey's world is enchanting.

I think Anne McCaffrey was obsessed with abuse in one form or another. Poor Menolly abused by her parents.

Love this book though. Great story arc. Read by Sally Darling, who has a lovely soothing voice.

There is nothing like snuggling under the covers with one of your favorite books on a rainy day.

I love this book, unconditionally, so don't expect a fair review from me. This is the book that led to my discovery of both sci-fi and fantasy as genres, it opened up the world to me, at the time I was eleven but a decade (+) later I still enjoy it.

The book was written for an arguably younger audience than any other set of books in McCaffrey's Pern series. There is no sex, minimal violence, the reading level is definitly geared toward middleschoolers (not in a condescending way though), and the main characters are in their teens. Still, its a necessary part of the Pernverse for any enthusiast.

The characters are enjoyable, Harper Hall is a favorite location of mine, everyone wants a firelizard after reading this story, and its a quick but excellent read. I think it says something that I have read this book over a dozen times, but still find myself longing to relive the events therein.

Do yourself a favor if its raining out, curl up with any of your favorite books, but I do hope you'll give this one a try.

((Read as #100 book of 2012 in celebration of being able to read at all after a few trying years of little time for literature))

This series has been my favorite since childhood, and I have probably read all three dozens of times (if not more than that) I always enjoy coming back to this tale of a young girl who doesn't fit in her community, but escapes and lives on her own, finding her own community in a group of fire lizards she "impresses" - when she is eventually rescued, she starts to find out that she is not as useless as she felt in her hold, and becomes who she is meant to be.

This was a formative book in my teen years; I relished Menolly's capable qualities, her independence and strong - though suppressed - sense of herself.
A girl of 15 who can decide to leave the oppressive confines of home and not only survive but thrive, who rescues and cares for fire lizards, who despite family & cultural structures continues to make art, who can find shelter, food, craft tools & implements...Menolly was my heroine!

Coming back to the text, it's still a rattling yarn despite the occasionally clunky writing.
