This is definitely one of the easier fantasy worlds I’ve been able to just jump into. I’m not sure if there’s books in Pern before this one but this is the first in a trilogy and really interesting. I’m definitely intrigued to continue and learn more about this world.

These were piled all over libraries and thrift shops when i was a kid, but I never picked up a copy. I'm glad I didn't. It's not an awful book, but there wasn't much in it to appeal to young boys.

It was a rather interesting look at fantasy weaned off of its testosterone supplements. it is one of a the only completely non-violent fantasy novels I can think of. The peasants all labor away. Their overlord protectant them from natural hazards and otherwise leave them alone.

The heroine suffers in a community that others seem to agree is exceedingly backward and chauvinist, but she isn't abused or beaten, just prevented from singing and otherwise left remarkably alone.

It demonstrated that you can craft readable fantasy without a sword fight every other page, though ti does show that such is pretty unexciting when stacked up against GoT.

This is dated in many ways, and there are problems with mccaffreys work - definitely by today’s standards. But this coming of age story is less problematic than those of hers that focus on older characters and their sex lives. I loved it when I read it as a young girl, still liked it today.

This was the book that I originally read first when I was a kid and, upon rereading it, I can see why I liked the series so much. It's so much less clunky than the first two Dragon Riders books and it's very easy to like the characters who are supposed to be liked. Even though it's just the heroes journey colored with all the things that a kid would dream about, it feels fresh and never comes across as a bunch of plot points in the journey strung together. I think that if I'd started with this one this time around, I'd have been a little less judgmental of the two Dragon Riders books that I just read because I feel a lot more drawn into the world and, even if I wasn't as drawn to the characters from those two books, I can care a lot more about what they're trying to accomplish.

A long-time favorite, this is the first time I've ever listened to it. While I still prefer the print copy, this was better than nothing, and not a bad way to revisit the series.

Menolly lives in an isolated, rigid, hard-working sea hold, where life revolves around fishing and traditional roles. Her musical abilities are largely unappreciated and the story begins as her mentor has just died. With his passing, Menolly's tuneful proclivities are harshly deterred. After a devastating injury, which her mother allows to heal poorly to inhibit her playing, Menolly runs away.

Her dreams of becoming a harper are dashed, but she survives on her own in the wilderness for several weeks, impressing a third of a clutch of fire dragons before being picked up by a dragon rider. Her life all of a sudden opens up with possibilty.
