i very much enjoyed this simple coming of age story. menolly has great musical talent--but it is put down and hidden because she is a girl and the custom of her hold says that girls cannot be harpers. she is abused so much she ends up running away to find a new life with fire lizards, but must be wary of the ever present danger of thread.

i love anne mccffrey. but my favorite books by her are the harper hall trilogy, i love the combination of music and dragons, two of my favorite subjects anyway. menolly is a character i can see myself knowing, she is wonderful!! her g personal growth through her impression of the firelizards and separation from her oppressive and misunderstanding family, will take her far, if she lets it.
