One of my favorite and most-reread books of all time, and the first audiobook I ever picked out. It was a book on cassette tape from the library back in ‘92. Since I’m still on a reread kick, I went with a relisten :) A tale of an extremely capable teen escaping oppressive circumstances and being recognized and adored for her natural talent. And there’s dragons. <3
adventurous fast-paced

Menolly is a strong female character that I loved as a teenager and continue to love as an adult. McCaffrey's characters, creatures, and environments are charming and intriguing. The things like foods and animals are exotic and fictional, but McCaffrey makes them feel familiar and most of all REAL. It's a short and sweet read that is an excellent introduction to the world of Pern, and if you're one for science fiction or fantasy, it's one that can certainly get you hooked! The beautiful way McCaffrey writes about music makes for an especially appealing read as well, the songs she includes are ones that have stuck in my head for years.

I chose to read this book due to being a book from my favorite series and author and a re-read book for my staff reading challenge. I decided to try something different and listen to an audio book version of it. I love the narrator as her voiced match the book perfectly. I did find the normal speed a bit slow but like audio book compared to normal hard cover books, it makes you listen to it all and not skip ahead which I normal do with something I've read like hundred times before.

Inspired to reread after a former student quoted one of Menolly's songs on Twitter. Oh, how I love these books!

Oh man, the nostalgia! As an adult, I can see the flaws...but it's such good fun worldbuilding, and the adolescent angst ("Nobody underSTANDS me and my family doesn't LOVE me so I'm going to RUN AWAY and find a bunch of BABY DRAGONS and THEN THEY'LL ALL BE SORRY!!!!!") is very well-done. A good nostalgic wallow of a book, entirely worth staying up until 1:30 to finish.

I adore this book. I’m really partial to stories with dragons and wilderness survival, so it’s a perfect match. It’s a very melancholic book, the characters aren’t happy very often, but it’s a tale of strength and survival and being true to yourself. I really sympathize and believe in Menolly.
