This somewhat disappointed me, since it was just a retelling of book 2 from a different point of view. Though, I like how Menolly was introduced and her fire dragons are pretty neat! The storytelling just bothered me. :(

As a teenager in the 80s I read this many, many times. The Harper trilogy books belonged to my favourite books in that decade, together with The White Dragon. Menolly has always been my favourite character, besides Robinton. I though she was great, overcoming all those challenges with her family, being independent, finding the fabulous fire lizards and a place for herself to belong... Now, 40 years later, I was a bit apprehensive about my re-read. It is such a horrible thing to find out when something, that you cherish in your memory, doesn‘t pass the test of time. This book did pass the test of time though. I had a lot of fun and pretty much started re-reading Dragonsinger right away.
Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. The first time I read thisd novel I did not enjoy it all that much but upon re-reading it I realized just how good it actually is.
What an enchanting read this was. Certainly, how the story is told shows sometimes its age, but mostly, this is just a fantastic story told so beautifully, with such a strong hold on what makes the heart happy and leaves you smiling.
So glad I finally chose to read this book.
There are trigger warnings for this book, and it was obviously written in a different decade, but, what a beautiful story and the dragons, I want a dragon too.

I love this book and it’s sequel more with every passing year. My physical copy is fall apart. It is so good. I still want to slap Yanus and Mavi silly.
Short and sweet. Not very interesting. We follow the story of Menolly.
Pretty simple: wants something, can't because of her sex, finds fire lizards, becomes welcomed in new community, happy ending.
Replays what we've already learned about dragons, fire lizards, threads. I didn't learn anything new.
Not much danger. Maybe when she was stuck outside during thread for a short while, but we know she had found suitable shelter earlier.
Just feels like a long way to get singing fire lizards. This simple & cute idea with a book written around it.
