This book was weird. It says a lot and does nothing. There’s a lot of story and also very little story. It doesn’t do a good job of setting any scene, at any time. It takes a long time to start, none of the characters are easy to connect with or are particularly endearing, and even though big events occur none of them are exciting or surprising. The women in this book are very clearly written by a man. There are odd descriptions of situations, particularly involving women or girls, that aren’t necessary. The growth/arc of the main character is objectively drastic, but feels like it happens all at once and is therefore anticlimactic. I think this book had a ton of potential but needed a different author.

Human and humorous.

emotional fast-paced

engaging - a quick read - uncle nat is an interesting narrator. one who simply, but deftly moves the story along. all the twists and turns seem plausible. his perspective on life, tinged with a healthy dose of cynicism is not overblown or overly sentimental.
