Mostly read to see a continuation of Howl and Sophie’s story. They are featured in the book, but it is largely its own story. This book had slight similarities to the first one in terms of its whimsical nature…I ultimately didn’t feel as engaged while reading. I enjoyed the book a lot up until about mid way. I started losing interest and was having to force myself to continue. That being said, it wasn’t a terrible read. There was not much character development in the end, and I can see why Abdullah gets as much hate as he does. He is somewhat of a dislikable character. I tend to enjoy flawed characters (such as Howl) but Abdullah wasn’t really compelling to me in the same way Howl was. He was just dislikable with no redeeming qualities…
I don’t regret reading but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this book, at least not with the expectations of getting more of what was loved about Howl’s Moving Castle.

Cozy low stakes fantasy with pretty good audio narrator
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Castle in the Air by Diana Wynne Jones. This sorta-sequal to Howl’s Moving Castle was delightfully dream-like and filled with whimsy. Diana painted images in my mind that were very ghibli-esk with her fairytale sing songy writing. I could have done without the casual moralising of thinness and body weight, though.
I think I also need to give Howl’s Moving Castle another chance after reading this book. Initially, I was put off by how different it was from my beloved Ghibli film adaptation of the same name. But, I think if I go back into it knowing what to expect, I may enjoy it more.

A wonderful continuation of the Howl’s Moving Castle world with interesting new influences and characters.
