Although it had nothing on first book, I still enjoyed this book. I liked that it's more of a companion novel and less a sequel. There are a bunch of cool surprises towards the end

Diana Wynne Jones is always delightful to read and a great easy break from a lot of the dense sci fi I’ve been reading lately. I loved that Howl and Sophie returned in this book. The plot wasn’t as engaging as Howl’s Moving Castle, but it was fun to listen to on audiobook and a good lighthearted “dessert” read.

I must admit, I enjoyed this more than Howl's Moving Castle. I found the story easier to follow, I thought it was clearer what was going on in this book. I liked the characters, Midnight and Whippersnapper were obviously up there as favourites, even after the reveals. I actually really enjoyed the reveals, I spent a lot of time up until that point wondering if this was a sequel or just a story in the same universe. I would argue it probably falls somewhere between the two. I was a little concerned I wasn't going to want to finish the trilogy but now I'm actually quite excited to see how it ends! I'm glad I carried on and read Castle in the Sky so let's hope the third book doesn't disappoint!

Missing the charm of Howl’s Moving Castle and a lot of the descriptions were bad- unexpected fat shaming, a mediocre lead obsessed with beauty above other traits, poorly written relationships. A weird follow up.
