Great debut book! Can't wait for more to come in the future. The family dynamic in this story is really beautiful. As messed up as things become, there is such a strong sense of familial love and acceptance but in a very realistic manner. It felt like a very delicate balance of the harsh reality of the emotional tolls of dealing with mental illness, with a young woman's venture to find her own identity, and the bond of the family members through their imperfections.

Snowflake is an interesting story of family bonds, friendship and a village community, with overriding themes of mental health issues and ‘finding your feet in the world’.
I found this book rather slow-going until I was about 40% of the way through. The story picked up a little after this but overall I didn’t feel there was much of a plot to make this an engaging read for me. The story also seemed to lack any conclusion - it felt like there was just an abrupt stop.
The story features a real mix of characters and they are well-depicted by the author. The chapters are short and concise which makes it easier to read. Snowflake is a good debut novel but lacking the ‘wow-factor’ for me.
Thank you to the publisher, Manilla Press for an advance digital copy of this book via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Snowflake is about a young woman who lives on a dairy farm in rural Ireland with her mother, her mother's boyfriend and her uncle (who actually lives in a small caravan on the land) she achieves a place in university so at first we read all about her struggles to adapt to being in the city and being around so many different people. She finds her place throughout the book, but we also learn more about the close relationship she has with her uncle, and the unconventional relationship she has with her mother, who has struggled with mental illness her whole life.
She makes a really important friend who she believes is far too cool and clever to want anything to do with her, but the girls soon become very close. We read about struggles with mental illness, manic behaviour, stresses and strains of everyday life and how they become escalated during a tragedy. Throughout it all though, there is a great sense of humour. The main character is very witty, interesting and charms you with her quirky ways.

Snowflake was beautiful and tragic and maybe even a little aimless. The characters all deserved a hug, and while I kept searching for the point of it all, I still felt satisfied at the end. I had a lot of wrong guesses while reading it about where the plot might be heading, but I liked that it surprised me. I can’t tell if I liked Debbie or not, bur her flaws made her feel real. Billy was my absolute favorite and could easily be the star of a tv show. I’m drawn to anything that takes place in Dublin, and this has been sitting on my shelf for about 4 years, but I wish I had read it sooner.
