The first 5 stars of the year and so well deserved - just beautiful. The characters were flawed but ultimately so very likeable. Can’t wait to see more of this author

i’ve had this book on my shelf for 2 years and i’m so glad i finally took the plunge and read it

it’s a coming of age story about a girl called debbie who lives on a dairy farm in ireland with her mum and uncle.

i didn’t actually expect to like this book this much. i’m not sure what i was expecting to be honest. it just felt so real and i could feel myself warming to the characters. i honestly felt like i was debbie and i was reading about my life. (i’m not irish nor 18 anymore) but that’s how real it felt. it’s raw, heartwarming and disturbing in some parts.

my first 5 star read of 2023.

One of those debut novels where the author is trying to do too much. Some aspects of the story were compelling but others felt underdeveloped and that ending was far too contrived for my liking. 2.5 rounded up.

Oh this just encapsulated everything I love about Irish lit. Beautifully written, tender, hilarious and devastating.

I loved this coming of age novel set in Ireland. Both sad and funny, it was filled with fantastically thoughtful imagery, like the decapitated Buddha in the old house's garden. All the characters were rich and relatable and the story was continually twisting and turning in ways I didn't expect. Nealon is a brilliant writer with a penchant for crisp depictions of internal experience.
