(3.5) this book was a nice coming of age story and i definitely have a soft spot for irish lit. it was a nice and easy read, but i found myself wishing for more of the side characters, funnily enough. debbie is an ideal protagonist, the girl on the precipice of her life changing, but at times she felt dull and even annoying. the book is told from her point of view, but for some reason i felt as if i didn't get to know her very well and was therefore surprised by some of her actions (making out with and almost sleeping with a man her mother's age???). characters like billy, maeve, xanthe, and even audrey came across as more vibrant and interesting to me than debbie (although maybe that was the point -- debbie feeling like a dull and uninteresting farm girl in the otherwise glamorous world of trinity and dublin at large). if i were to read a college coming of age story in this universe, i think i would have preferred one from the point of view of xanthe as i feel like there's so much to explore (her parents' relationship, her feelings for griff and her boyfriend, her depression, her relationship with money, her anorexia, etc.) and her story also allows for us to meet maeve, billy, and audrey.

Hated the main characters for the first half of this book. I found the self hatred and self destruction from debbie frustrating and hard to read. In the second half of the book she develops a lot and I loved reading about their adventures on the island and gradual healing.
