I Inhaled this. It was an easy read and I just love Irish families and Irish descriptions. Lots of very serious themes but done in a very heart-warming way and I loved that there weren't too many characters to try to understand, so I could just really focus on Debbie, Maeve and Billy. I would recommend this to friends and would probably read again.

I thought this was a fantastic book. It is a coming of age novel with a lot of heavy themes. The characters in the novel feel real and alive, and the portrayal of female friendship in all its complexity is really accurate. The struggle of being jealous of each other because of what they are and what you aren’t and trying to work through that. The fact that as women we compulsively compare ourselves to every other female around us whether we want to or not. Debbie’s journey through depression, alcoholism, and figuring out her sexuality is very real and something a lot of people go through and to read it was to feel relief that other people have gone through it as well. I felt so frustrated with her when she repeatedly tried to talk to people about her problems but then wouldn’t tell the truth or say what was actually wrong, but that’s the point. In Ireland, the stigma is not to talk about it and this book was shedding light on that and the importance of reaching out for help when you are struggling. ALSO the prose is magical.

I really enjoyed this. The characters felt real, and the pacing was excellent. The dialogue felt lived in - too many books these days leave me rolling my eyes and saying "no one talks like this!!"
The unusually short chapters really made the book whip by.
I can't really say why I'm not rating this higher, I just don't think I'll think about it for a long time I suppose? An interesting portrayal of grief and look at different coping mechanisms.
