I liked it but it didn't really surprise me.
I loved that Rose is such a kick-ass protagonist and never too tired to be sassy and I just really want her relationship with Dimitri to start...
Soo now I have to find the time to read the 5 sequels...yay

Wow. I actually liked it. I read this for a book club type thing on a site I am on, because it was the best option I had and I actually liked it. SIGH!

I have one comment to make here.
Yes. Good job, Richelle Mead, that gives a very clear picture of what the Academy's insides look like. You have lights. And Wi-Fi. And possibly robot butlers. The first 'any other technology' that I imagine is a robot butler. If these vampires don't have robot butlers, I will be very disappointed.
This book was in general rather disappointing. A depressed character with possibly the most stereotypical depression ever and some rather questionable plots and events. Plus I hate the main character. Who acts like that, anyway? One minute shamelessly making out with someone on a couch and the next going on about how responsible you've become. Good character development. Really believable.
I don't even know why I bothered finishing this.
"Despite the looming stone walls, fancy statues, and turrets on the outsides of the buildings, the Academy's insides were quite modern. We had Wi-Fi, fluorescent lights, and just about anything else technological you could imagine."

I read this after the vampire craze started to die down thinking it would be a refreshing take on vampires and I wasn't disappointed. The characters develop well and the diversity of settings and characters kept me coming back to the series (including the spin-off).
If it weren't for the swearing, I would give this book a six. It was really good and I had such a hard time putting it down. I don't know how I'm going to keep myself from the rest of the series!
Update, read #2: Sexist af. Nope. Done. The swear words are no problem now but treating dhampir women who sleep with the moroi men, bear children, and then raise those children as “blood whores” while the creepy moroi men who ran off after one night pleasures, and never gave a rat’s ass about their kids after aren’t given any name at all, bad or good? Hell effing no.

Re-read for the first time since I was 19 and it did not age as well as I'd hoped. So much petty Mean Girls-esque drama, and that age gap is... Yikes.
Still going to continue with the series re-read though because I'm weak for Shadow Kiss

With the release of the last book in Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy spin-off series, Bloodlines, released earlier this month, I thought it was about time I jumped on the band wagon. When I saw a read-along on Goodreads for 'Vampire Academy' I just couldn't resist.
I went into this book not knowing much about it, apart from the fact that it was set at an academy for vampires. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that our protagonist, Rose, isn't actually a vampire, she's a dhampir - a vampire guardian, half-human and half-Moroi. The Moroi are a type of vampire: mortal vampires, who can withstand certain amounts of sunlight and an use magic related to elements (air, water, earth or fire, depending on which one they specialise in). However, in this universe, there are two types of vampires, the other being the Strigoi. The Strigoi are vampires who have given up their ability to withstand sunlight and their ability to use magic, to become immortal. The way they become immortal is by killing Moroi, which is why the Moroi need their guardians around them at all times.
When we join Rose, she's on the run with a member of the Moroi royalty, and her best friend, Lissa. As you can imagine by the title, them being on the run doesn't last too long and they get brought back to St. Vladimir's, the school that they escaped from just over two years ago.
