Why does Memorial Day weekend exist? Holidays are screwing up my Amazon shipping speed so I won't get my box set until Wednesday! This book was amazing and really something I needed right now. It's right up my alley for fantasy and although sometimes the characters got on my nerves, I really love the world and the plot and it was all together a great story. Sometimes the writing felt a bit young for me but that doesn't make it any less of a great novel. I know vampires are kind of "out", but if you like contemporary fantasy, this is 100% worth checking out :)?
I first read these books when I was 13 years old. I loved them then, and VA was my favorite series for years. But now, looking back at it, I can't help but notice the many problems. And I can't go back to enjoying them like I had before. So I'm giving 3 stars out of consideration for how I felt about this series once, because I really wish I could keep liking it as before, but I don't and can't bring myself to give 2 stars to it.
overall, okelaaaaah :)

I started this purely out of boredom and because it's been on my shelf for years. I'm a little over high school drama narratives, but I needed to try reading *something*.
Honestly...I didn't expect to like it as much as I did??
I finished it in one day, got really attached to the characters (though I have a love/hate relationship with all of them) and am happy to pick up the sequel today.
It's not the greatest book I've ever read or anything (about 3.5 stars), but it was fun and enjoyable and I can't rate the first book I've read in like, two months too low, really.

This book was a very fast read for me, and I really enjoyed it! I love vampire books and having it set in a school personalised it much more for me as the characters are all around my age. There was a lot of world building in this book, while there was also a mystery running throughout of what happened before the events of the book. It kept me entertained all through and I can't wait to read the others! 5/5 stars
I read this book thinking vampire fiction was boring and mainstream, until I read this. Ms. Mead brought me into St. Vlad's, the world of Moroi's, dhamphir's, and Strigoi. In this world, instead of all the vampires being the bad guys, they were all classified according to their ranks and stature. Its pretty unusual but it turned out well. I was surprised too, because Ive read better books over the past couple of months but I really wasnt very drawn into the story. This time, I felt every single emotion our protagonist, Rose Hathaway, conveyed. She was a rule breaker, she was stubborn and frustrating and very impulsive. I didnt like her very much, although Im a young adult myself. I really cannot relate to her, at all. She's very self-confident, to the point of arrogance. She's very aware of her poularity and fame, especially the effects she has on guys. She uses these things to get her way, and she gets very frustrated if she doesnt get her way. Which is why, when her "god-like' instructor comes along, Rose goes crazy from the lack of attention he gives her, which is something unusual for her. I guess Richelle Mead wants her to be that cool girl, the popular, stunning, badass heroine, but in my opinion, she tried too hard. Or maybe my definition of 'cool' just doesnt match with hers. But aside from that, Rose was definitely very bad ass, strong-willed and could stand up for herself. She has her share of misfits and mistakes (mostly caused by her frustratingly impulsive nature), kinda like Buffy. She seems to learn her lessons too, and there was a lot of character development in just one book. I seem to recall feeling the exact same way towards Katniss and Bella.
I also dissaproved of the shifting dialogue. At times it was poetic but sometimes it got stilted, which was why I was confused about Rose at the beginning.
The story was good, loved the colorful characters, loved the story and I absolutely adore Dimitri. Looking forward to seeing more of rose and the gang.

- This was honestly just okay. I enjoyed it whilst I was listening to it but it isn't something that I'm going to remember forever. Excited to see where the story goes though.

Vampire books have such a negative stigma since Twilight so I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. This book has everything I enjoy: supernatural setting, royal families, boarding school, awesome female friendships?!?! Yes please. The best part is this book can really stand alone. The ending gives you enough closure that you don't have to immediately pick up the next one. Except I probably will. Life is too short to not indulge in stories about vampire bffs.
I really swallowed this book up. it was so good and it kept me enthralled the whole time. the plot line is great and I love richelle mead's vampire mythology and rules she set; it's new and refreshing from other vampire stories.
the friendship between rose and lissa made me so happy and I really felt the emotions between the two.
dmitri and rose are endgame, just you wait and see!
