this book is one of those 5 star reads that you think about long after finishing. It’s beautiful, heartwarming, and while it’s fictional, it’s very eye-opening into what Samí people experience in real life. It takes place over Elsa’s childhood & young adulthood, so you become really invested in her and the characters around her. Favorite book.

Perfekte Winterlektüre und toller Einblick in die Lebensweise und Konflikte von Samen beim Aufeinandertreffen von Indigener Tradition und Wandel und welche Hürden einem Leben in Frieden gestellt werden durch Rassismus und Ignoranz. Eine rührende Coming-of-Age Story, die wichtige Themen und Konflikte anspricht, sehr aktuell ist und ein angenehmes Tempo beim Lesen bietet.

Stolen by Anne-Helen Laestadius provides an encyclopedic guide to all things Sami - from their relationship with the reindeer and the earth, to their traditional clothing and culture. But therein lies the problem, or one of the problems. Laestadius adds scenes that serve only to illustrate the lives of the Sami people (considered the only true indigenous people of Europe) and don’t advance the story at all. The story dragged. And dragged. And the suspense being drawn lags and lags. By the time the culmination of the plot is resolved, I found it hard to care. Further, emotionally charged scenes were flat and the characters seemed to experience little joy. In all, a bummer of a story, but an interesting depiction of Sami life in the far north of Sweden.
