This was a passionate almost visceral WWII novel. Barr did a fantastic job bringing the story and characters to life. I learned a number of things about what occurred in Warsaw and I’m eager to dive deeper into the city’s history during this time period.

I think my only complaint would be I wanted a bit more from the author’s note. Otherwise this book was well-paced, gripping, and evocative. I found her lust for her brother-in-law, while aggressively written at times, honest in the sense that her feelings from before the war wouldn’t just disappear because of the horrors they were facing.

I’m torn between 4 & 5 stars for this book so I’ll give it 4.5 but round down since I’m uncertain.

Overall I just wasn't a fan. To me, the characters felt very one dimensional, the plot was weak, and there was way too much deus ex machina.

This could have been a good book. The concept sounds good in theory. But the writing is overdramatic. There are way, way too many anachronisms in the vocabulary used and in the description of the ghetto and the apartment that anyone with a basic understanding of the history of the time or place should find inappropriate and distracting. There was more that was disappointing, but I found myself so frustrated with the writing that it distracted me from remembering.
