Wow- this was definitely a “ just one more chapter” book for me! A historical fiction and thriller all in one (2 of my favorite genres!). Bina/Irina/Lena was a Jewish woman living in the Warsaw ghetto. On her side was the fact that she looked Aryan and could disguise herself to get things. She, as well as so many others around her, lost so much during this time. She decided she wasn’t going to just sit back and allow things to get worse… she would stand up with others and fight and avenge for the losses they have suffered at the hands of the Nazis. This story is told with lots of highs and lows, including a great deal of sadness but also hope. It has lots of drama and pulls out many feelings. The fact that many of the atrocities in the story were true, really makes you stop and think, as many tales from this genre typically do.
The only thing that I didn’t quite love, was all of the talk around Bina’s obsession with her brother in law. It made for some uncomfortable reading, to say the least. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and storytelling by Lisa Barr.
