Wonderful story but only three stars because it's about 1/3 longer than it needs to be. Better editing and this would be a 4-5 star book for me.

Definitely not my favourite Douglas Kennedy book. I found it to be an interesting idea, but far too long-winded.

Book Review
The Moment is a novel written primarily about Berlin in 1984, when the Wall was still in place, dividing East from West Germany. Mr. Kennedy writes a story of a travel writer who goes to Berlin to write the follow up to his debut novel. Perhaps because the story is about a writer, I found it took a very long time to get to the main plot of the story, with a lot of unimportant details. There was much written about the main character's life before his trip to Berlin, which was really unnecessary. Once I got to the story on Berlin, it was very well written and exciting. It describes the complexity of what that time must have been like for people living in divided Germany. His description of the city, both East and West make the reader want to travel there to see the city even now years after the Wall has come down. The plot regarding the spying and espionage was a bit predictable but you feel bad for Thomas, the main character in the novel because he has either been duped or lost his one chance for true love in his lifetime. The author does give us the perspective of Petra, the young woman Thomas falls in love with, but it may have been better if we had her perspective mixed in with Thomas' throughout the story, not just in a few chapters near the end. Overall it was a good book, especially if you like travel or destination novels.

This book was a great story and I liked all the twists and turns, but I really didn't enjoy the way he writes.

I would give this 3.5 stars. I'll admit I don't know much about the history of Berlin and the divide between East and West Germany. I was in grade school when the Berlin Wall came done. I had little to no knowledge of what that meant. This book explores that time period and what it meant to live in the GDR through a fictional story of a writer and his relationships with women who never seem to match up with the woman he met and loved in Berlin.

It was predictable..if you know Kennedy's work .. you'll know what this means. His works are usually easy reads ..

A really unexpected twists or twists in what started out as a somewhat idealistic love story between Thomas and Petra. It kept me turning the pages.

I very much enjoy Mr Kennedy's work and this no exception (ok ... the exception is "The Woman on the Fifth").
A great read set in walled-Berlin. I found it a little slow when the heroine was telling her story, but otherwise fine.
Has me wondering about moments of decisions (or in decisions) that have consequences. Don't they all?
