The author did an excellent job speaking from the perspective of an obsessive stalker / murderer. There was just a bit too much crude language for my tastes - might be accurate, but it got old for me.
I loved it! I saw the show first and it was ok but the book is much better
The last 20% of the book was thrilling but the rest of it was strictly ok.
highly recommend listening to the superb audiobook version starring prince hans from the disney movie frozen for the full "how am i gonna sing along to 'love is an open door' from now on" experience. besides the fact that he slayed this performance, he also managed to make this shit sound even creepier than it already is which is something that i didn't think was possible but here we are.
also, don't trust anyone that categories this as an actual love story or romanticizes the protagonist. if they happen to be your friend, run for your life. just my 2 euro cents.

You is my favorite tv show, and I had considered reading the books for a while now. Had some painting to do, so finally jumped into the audio book... and I was not impressed. The show is wildly different, thankfully.
In the show, you don't want to root for Joe, but you do. Penn is an incredible actor, and makes you feel bad for Joe, and you end up wanting him to succeed and find love. A moral dilemma ensues as Joe is a literal killer, but you still end up liking him. Beck also needs a quick mention, she is so self absorbed in the show, and she had just no character other than she is a love interest.
Book Joe is NOTHING like the show. He is unlikable, sexist, and a disgusting human. Exactly what you imagine a serial killer to be, to be fair. You hate him, and rightfully so. The author definitely wrote a terrible character, but did it well. Book Beck has mildly more personality than show Beck, but she is still a narcissistic nothing burger of a character.
Had I not watched the show, and read some reviews, I would have HATED this book. I don't DNF books, but this would have been a DNF 20 pages in. The writing is okay, and the plot is great, but dear lords this was a slog to get through. Joe just makes reading, or listening to, this book an absolute chore.
I do not recommend the book. If you do read it keep in mind it is nothing like the show, and that book Joe SUCKS!

Got so bored of Joe‘s complacency and misogyny
First things first: I am going to write two reviews for this! This is my spoiler-free one.
YOU is a compelling read, but certainly not the most compelling one I have ever encountered. Joe Goldberg is a very well-written narcissistic sociopath (as one would imagine!), and the back-and-forth beteeen ‘good’/happy times to ‘bad’/painful times kept the entire pacing of the book feel comfortable and anticipatory. I started this book around 9:30 at night on April 8th and stayed up until 3 AM to read all 400+ pages, and as I do not do that terribly often, I will definitely say this novel kept me /needing/ to know what happened next.
Beck is an excellently written simultaneously protagonist and antagonist, and most of the adversaries Joe faces were well-written enough, or at the very least pretty interesting. I do feel the need to warn younger readers that this book goes very into erotica territory, and make no mistake, this is ABSOLUTELY NOT A ROMANCE.
The ending is unfortunately very, very predictable, and the book could have stood to be about 100-150 pages shorter with nothing lost. Overall, I give this book a 3.75, but I will round up because Kepnes is an author who is not afraid to show the extremely perverse with unflinching honesty, and I love her for that in particular.
