This did not have the same "oomph" that Fable and Namesake did. I really wanted more of Saint's and Isolde's backstory with their families. There was not enough tension with Zola either, in my opinion. It was an easy read that always moved along and had no slow points, at least. For me, it just did not capture the same energy as the originals.

3/5 - Great to read if you really want to know about the early days of pre-Fable where her father falls in love with Isolde.

I personally could have done without reading this as I just did not care about Saint nor Isolde....

I don't think I would re-read this particular book again.

I love a prequel when it’s well-crafted and adds to the lore of a world without feeling too convenient. And this was it! I always have so much fun in the world of the narrows and seeing how trade began to evolve because of Saint was no different. I honestly was not expecting this to be dual POV considering the book is named after Saint himself, but I found myself loving Isolde, too (though at times she actually felt like the true main character?). It was a lot more romance-heavy than I was expecting, but I didn’t mind — this is probably the strongest romance Adrienne Young has written in the series! You can tell through the beautiful writing how much AY loves these characters, and I do, too. I’d gladly eat up any other books AY writes in this series.

A better prequel than I hoped for.

This book is advertised as a prequel, but I would advise against reading it before the Fable series. It had a distinctly negative impact on my reading experience for that series. All the positives from this book were undone in those books, and those books were made more frustrating by knowing this story. If you want to read it, read it after reading the Fable duology or read t as a standalone.

Really enjoyed this prequel! It is so well written that you don't need to to have read the two books already released that come after it in the timeline but you will want to. If you have read Fable and Namesake then you will already be invested in Saint and Isolde and I guess Clove. These younger versions show us how their story started and gives so much more depth to their character and background to their story that it captivates you. It is laced with a will they wont they (even though you know if you have read Fable & Namesake) but there is actually very little written romance, it just fizzling chemistry.
I listened to the audio version and enjoyed listening to the narrators.

I received this audio ARC for free through NetGalley. This is my honest review.
