Yes, I know this was a Wattpad book. But I was hoping it wouldn’t give so much Wattpad energy. I’ll still watch the show, because I like to torture myself I guess. Quick read, if you want something easy and low commitment and a little fun it’s good.

this was originally published on wattpad so idk what I was expecting

I NEED MORE

I know you wrote this book quite a few years ago, but the Netflix show brought me here and as soon as I binged the show I got the book and now I am left bereft! I’m going to need this story to continue!

Watched the series and obvi had to give the book a go. It was a quick read and equally as cringey as the show in some parts. Team Cole in both show and book but he was slightly less obnoxious in book. I liked the love triangle ending a lot better in book as well.

It was a cute, lighthearted romance read. Would read again, but there definitely wasn’t much sustenance and I wasn’t impressed with the ending.

Alex…you suck.

Cole, you need some work but I’m even more team Cole after reading the book than the show!

So many changes were made from the book to the show and I was frustrated with the fact that I was rooting for Jackie and Cole the whole time and silly Alex got in the way…obvi I’m hooked and cannot wait for the second book (and second season!!)

So cute. Love Cole Walter

Strangely addictive for a story I really didn't believe in. I felt invested in the characters for the most part, though I struggled to be convinced that main character Jackie was realistic. She was simply too perfect, especially for someone who was supposed to have just lost her entire family in a car crash. Aside from a few musings about how much she misses her family, she appears to be blessedly trauma free, with the ability to stay focused at school, have crushes, and placate the Walter family drama with her logical, sensitive approach to life. Like her foster mother Katherine, she really is the epitome of a good girl and I found that very irritating. The only way to not be a good girl, in this story, is to be Parker, a girl who eschews femininity, or one of the many sad girls in love with Cole, who are pretty one-dimensional and romance-obsessed.

The teen drama between the two Walter boys who are crushing on Jackie would have felt more realistic if she wasn't staying with them in such a dramatic and tragic situation. If she were just there for a gap year it would have been really fun! A bit like Cheaper by the Dozen meets teen rom-com.

As for the Walter boys: I got Alex and Danny frequently confused and by the end still wasn't sure what it was about Alex that made Jackie choose him when Danny also existed! I do like the fact that she chose Alex over Cole because Alex was dependable, loyal and respectful. But unfortunately this is the type of story that casts rollercoaster love as the more exciting, desirable love.

I liked reading about Cole, though, because he was actually complex and didn't mind the sibling rivalry with Alex, but if only it were consistent and not just about Jackie.

I liked the idea of Isaac, Lee and Parker as they had realistic reactions to having another family member taken in. I can't remember who the other boys are, and which were actually cousins. I really felt like they adjusted to life with Jackie much too easily.

I'm keen to check out the TV show/film but I wouldn't want to read this again. The audiobook probably kept me going though the narrator's voice made Jackie feel older than she was.
