Cute YA romance! A little young for my taste but I knew that going in, I think I would have loved this in my teens.
fast-paced

⚠️TW - death of family, car crash, survivors guilt, ⚠️

I understand that Jackie lost her whole family in a car crash, but her character was unlikable. The Walter boys were no better though, especially at the beginning. They treated her like she was an inconvenience even after learning about her family. The most redeeming part of this book was Cole's bonus scene.

Personally I was unable to root for Jackie to end up with any of the Walter boys. Katherine is her legal guardian, so whether she's related to them or not, they are legally her brothers and that gave me the ick.

I felt like this book was super predictable which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but for me it just wasn't it. I didn't feel like this was an unputdownable book. I kept finding that I had to force myself to pick it back up. This book was just not for me. 3/5⭐

You can't prepare for love. It's not like taking your driver's test b it the SATs. It's a gift. One that can happen at any moment.

I knew what I was getting myself into. I absolutely loved to show on Netflix, and thus, had to read the book. If I did not know the show, which provided a lot more depth to the characters and built up the love triangle a lot smarter, I would not have been able to finish the book. The writing was more tell than show and the characters were bland and had not really a development. Nevertheless, the premisse of the author was really interesting. And I still was entertained reading the book.
(Without the show in the back of my mind probably only 2 stars)

when i was reading this i never once thought omg this would slay as a tv show. but the tv show was DEFINITELY better than this.

This was by no means a good book in terms of plot or writing style but it was very easy to listen to as an audiobook and have on in the background- I'm not sure how I would have felt about it if I'd read it instead. Although it differed a bit from the tv show I think they both capture what happens in the same way, if anything the show makes some of the characters more likeable and adds in some side plots which didn't feel like they were missing.
I'd compare this to The Summer I Turned Pretty although it was hard at times to tell who the audience is supposed to be for it. It's cheesy and cringe-y but pretty much what I expected from the book. The ending felt rushed and a bit abrupt but overall it was an easy listen.

This was okay. Jackie annoyed me at times, some choice Walter’s annoyed me. I watched the show before reading the book and I liked seeing the scenes they pulled (or pulled inspiration) from. Probably won’t read the sequel though, I’ll just stick to the show.

3.5!

Was the show some of the worst acting ever? Potentially. Was the book more or less your basic young adult romance? Yes. But I eat it up all the same. Team Cole forever.
