This book reminds me a lot of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” - one girl, two brothers, and a bizarre love triangle. After a tragic life event, Jackie goes to live with the Walter’s and soon finds herself torn between two of the brothers - Cole and Alex. The way Jackie acted around both boys reminded me a lot of Belly. The competitive rivalry between Cole and Alex reminded me a lot of Conrad and Jeremiah.

This book was okay, but I think this is one of the few times you will hear me say the show was better. Watching the show first may not have been the best decision, however, after listening to the audiobook I just felt like the book felt short. There were parts of this book that felt poorly written, or over emphasized. Additionally, some of the characters were just unlikeable in the book. For example, I loved Alex in the show but hate him in the book.

———————————————————————
Jackie Howard is orphaned after a terrible accident; her father (who Jackie is very similar too), her mother, and her sister Lucy (a year older, and a model). Jackie’s uncle Richard (not biological; her fathers college best friend) is a busy man, and decides it is best for Jackie to move to Colorado to live with her mother’s college best friend; Catherine Walter. There are 12 children in the Walter house (some biological children, some nephews)- 12 boys to be exact; Isaac, Jack, Cole, Nathan, Alex, Danny, Will (wife Hayley), Benny, Lee, Jordan, Zach, and Parker (she is the only girl in the Walter house).

Jackie comes from a wealthy family. She is on a mission to get into Princeton, and accepts nothing less than perfect. She grew up in a house with a private jet, chauffeurs, and maids. Everything had always been planned, down to a tee, and she does not take chances or steer away from the plan. When Jackie is thrown into the Howard’s chaotic life, her life is turned upside down. She is overwhelmed by chaos. The boys are loud, they’re everywhere, and they are out to make her life more interesting.

The Walter family lives on a farm. There is constant chaos. There are kids and toys everywhere. The boys range in ages and all bring their own interests to the table, leaving no room for dull moments.

Cole Walter was a football star who was injured the previous year and lost his scholarship. He is a ladies man, bouncing from girl to girl and keeping girls on the edge of their seats wondering if they’ll be his next love interest. Cole slowly begins romancing Jackie; inviting her to sit with him at lunch, taking her for a tour of the farm (adding her to the Walter height chart, encouraging her to jump into the hay, and taking her horseback riding). Cole takes a step back when Jackie and Alex start dating, but there’s is no denying the fact that he still has a crush on Jackie.

Alex is a sweet kid, who is always in competition with Cole. The two have always competed over girls, and Jackie is no exception. Despite seeing Cole making a move on Jackie, Alex tries his best to make his own move. He makes sweet gestures, teaches her how to play video games, and kisses her. Alex is a little fixated on GOG, a game he very intensely plays. Always competing with Cole, Alex asks Jackie to be his girlfriend. Alex pretty much uses Jackie as a conquest. He wants her so Cole can’t have her. He wants her to prove to his ex Mary that he is over her. He wants her for the ego boost.

In her first few days at her new school, Jackie makes friends with Heather and Riley. Heather approached Jackie and offered to work with her on a group project. Riley is in love with Cole Walter.

Jackie builds a special friendship with Danny. She slowly makes friends with Danny, learning about his hobbies and getting to know him better than he allows most people. She supports his desire to move to New York and pursue his interest in the arts, even considering moving back to her New York apartment with him and living together.
