Interesting little short story which makes me wonder if there will be more. Nice dark Gothic fantasy feel to it.

The most stunning short story ever. A mouthful of cackle, deep love, compassion, magic and understanding. Alix never misses.

“she knew me then, at the beginning of ourselves, and she knew me now, here at the end, when she did not even know herself.”

i think it's time i finally read one of alix e. harrow's novels because both short stories i've read from her are fucking majestic. this hooked me from the beginning and destroyed me at the end, and even if i wish it could have been expanded into a longer format, i loved every minute of it.

Absolutely as amazing and enchanting and tragically beautiful as "The Six Deaths of the Saint".

I need to read one of the author's full length novels ASAP!

“People start to talk, and once they’ve talked long enough, they act.”

“We learned, after the old world died, not to put our faith in the wood pulp or motherboards; the only archive that survives is the one we carry with us.”

“Why do people change, — ? Because they are cursed, pursued, poisoned, trapped, under siege. Because they have to.”

“the Bible and the gun — an old formula, well proved.”

I’ve read so much dystopian literature this week and I’m loving it… if not deeply disturbed by their relevance to current times. In this short story (recommended by @whatsemilyreadin) by Alix E Harrow, the author once again proves how this format is her speciality! The people in this world return to an “medieval” vibe in the powerful (rich) parts of society. The rest of the people turn into demons, eventually, in the wake of desperate conditions. The piece is about how difficult it is to settle, regulate or heal in the wake of trauma or devastation. To be a version of ourselves both changed, experienced and well — can it happen? Does it need to? I loved this and it moved me to tears more than once.
