I can't say the book was bad, but it couldn't hold my interest after a while. The concept is interesting, but I just wasn't connected with the characters enough to want to keep reading.

I don’t often listen to audiobooks, but I enjoyed the audio version of RUBICON.  I’ve always been a fan of science fiction, but lately, I’ve been reading more military sci-fi.  RUBICON is relatable, with excellent world-building and a likable main character.  It took me a bit to understand the world, but details are provided when they are needed without becoming an info-dump.

In RUBICON, there is an ongoing battle with the Mechan (sentient robots), who are attempting to assimilate and/or annihilate humanity.  After dying in the field, soldiers are resurrected back at their home base.  The main character, Adriene Valero, has just finished her ninety-sixth resurrection when she is reassigned to an elite unit that has better spacesuits, improved technology, and AI implants (called Rubicons) to improve soldiers’ awareness and battle worthiness.

I liked the pacing of the story, and was intrigued with Adriene’s conversations with her Rubicon.  When Adriene’s AI is upgraded when on a field mission, she becomes involved in a much greater mission.

The story was told in a compelling manner, however, the ending was a surprising disappointment.  I’m dropping half a star in my rating as a result.

Regardless, fans of EDGE OF TOMORROW, OLD MAN’S WAR, STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION (especially the Borg), and the TERMINATOR should enjoy this standalone novel!

I found some of the writing to be repetitive, such as how the author describes the characters' actions, and found the ending to be frustrating and unsatisfying.
