Charlotte's Web

It’s a children’s book and it deals with mortality, probably the first to do so in the genre. That’s appreciated but like many readers the story didn’t ring true to this reader. I picture Wilbur in his the old age sitting in a gloomy barn draped in thick layers of cobwebs surrounded by millions of spiders. Kind of a bizarre and gothic image. But if you extend the story that’s how it’ll end, I think. Also, the idea the pig should get all the attention when it was clearly the spider who was exceptional speaks to the way women of talent and genius were either pushed to the background, or to the side or just ignored just the way Charlotte was in the story, while an unexceptional version of a pig gets all the attention. So, it’s a sad book but not in the way the author intended it. Look, I get it. It’s a children’s book. You’re not supposed to think that much about it. But that’s not the problem with other beloved children’s books, Alice in Wonderland, the Little Prince or the Giving Tree and many others besides. We all have our opinions and that’s mine.

Found this in my drawer of books that I forgot about (oops) and I found my little 14 year old self’s annotations. I remember reading and writing about this in my journals, super cute book.

I don't know how I made it through childhood without reading this book. But it was just lovely. I kept thinking how fun it will be to read with my son in a couple years! Such a sweet story.

2023 Update- Just finished this as a read aloud with the boys and they all loved it!
