E.B. White's Charlotte's Web is a classic children's story that has been beloved for generations. It's easy to understand the nostalgic thrill that readers have had for this bucolic tale of rural folk, farm animals, and heroic insects. White has a wonderful gift for plain speaking in a manner that is so well suited to children. He explains without pulling punches that death is commonplace, butchery is normal, and that cannibalism is merely a way of life. To blend these baser life attributes with the sentimentality of innocence, love, and childhood without disturbing the reader - rather engaging them all the more - is a remarkable gift in any author, especially those writing for children.

*I used my children's lit class as an excuse to finally read this classic.* Fern stops her father from killing the runt of a litter of pigs. She raises little Wilbur until he is old enough to move to her uncle's farm. The other animals clue Wilbur in to the ways of the world: pigs are raised to be eaten. A kind spider named Charlotte befriends Wilbur and starts spinning webs with messages to draw attention to Wilbur. Because of Charlotte's special webs, Wilbur's life is spared. A book destined to turn thousands of kids into vegetarians.

Tonight I finished reading Charlotte's Web to Leo. We got to the last paragraph, and he wanted me to stop. I didn't quite understand, so I finished the book, and then he wept because it was over. And I was choked up because of Charlotte. We were a mess.
