This is typical Jonathan Tropper - dysfunctional family with daddy issues, misplaced love, protagonist going through a life crisis - and it's exactly why I love Jonathan Tropper. It's laugh out loud funny, the characters don't get embarrassed by the embarrassing situations they get themselves into, you root for the protagonist.

While I didn't love this one as much as "This Is Where I Leave You", this book still contained a lot of what I enjoy so far about Jonathan Tropper's writing. The plot moves along swiftly, full of witty dialogue and occasionally poignant and/or touching moments. I appreciate the honesty of Tropper's characters; it makes them feel like real people.

Thanks so much Courtney for recommending this author to me!! This was another excellent book by Jonathan Tropper...there's just something so intriguing about this author. His books (the two that I've read) aren't ever what I expect them to be. The characters are well developed and sympathetic, even when making questionable decisions. I thought that The Book of Joe would be a hard book to follow but this book definitely lived up to my expectations. I can't wait to read his other books!

A book that is clearly a light beach read but flirts with issues that gets it mistaken for something else. Not for me.

I liked this book a lot more than the only other Tropper book I have read (This is where I leave you). The characters here are less obviously cliched and convincingly messed up due to a death and other issues such as being essentially abandoned by their father.

I was pretty sure where the primary storyline of this book was going but a secondary storyline surprised me with a really heartwarming and believable ending.

I gave "This is where I leave you" four stars, but I'll have to re-evaluate that and give this one four stars instead because I felt this was certainly the better book and more consistently believable, whereas TIWILY feels like it should have come with its own canned laugh track.

I liked it. Had a few great laughs. Not his best work in my opinion but totally worth the time. He's a terrific writer. Finished well.

I really loved his book "This is Where I Leave You", and if I had read this one first I'd probably give it 5 stars. This book is really good, but it's the same voice that's in TIWILY, and I wonder if he's a one-trick pony. Either way, a funny and fast read.
