This was my first book by Rin Chupeco and I truly enjoyed getting to dive into some Filipino culture. The generalization about Americans, Hollywood, and doing what we want and not caring what happens hits especially with how things have been progressing here in the US over the past few years.

I really found myself getting creeped out while reading this book and probably shouldn't have read it before bed. But I truthfully couldn't stop. My one issue is that, I wish there was a portion that translated the Tagalog parts for the reader to understand. I'm part Filipino, but my nanay (mom) only taught me select terms and words. I would've loved to get the opportunity to learn more.

I can't wait to pick up more books by Rin Chupeco.

You know those characters in a horror movie where you barely see anything of their personality or inner lives because they're obviously there to play a part and nothing more? That's what the entire cast in this book felt like to me. The anti-colonialism theme was refreshing, but none of the characters came across as particularly compelling. Especially since half the cast was referred to by nicknames only for their real names to start getting used a bunch in the back half of the book. Chase in particular was annoying to read about. Their romance could've been cut out entirely with nothing lost. I will say, though, I thought the beginning provided some nice atmosphere build up. It's a shame that the other parts of the book didn't keep up.

Rin has a way of writing that sucks me in and keeps me entranced, and this book is no different. I may not be the target audience for their books, but I’m a fan nonetheless. The Sacrifice was everything I hoped it would be. Mystery, thrills, and twists. I cannot wait for this book to be released so I can hold it in my hands. I want more!

Well this was a good creepy time! I had no idea what to expect going in, but I was glued to the page from start to finish, and there were several "oh damn, Chupeco went there" moments in the writing, particularly comparing the Hollywood crew to the Spanish colonisers of the 16th century.

I will say that there WERE a few too many characters for my liking and given that many of them were referred to by both their names and a variety of nicknames, it was sometimes hard to keep track of who was who. I also felt that the protagonist could have been fleshed out more than he was. Like, I understand why Chupeco created that character in that way, but there were several times when I felt like I had no idea who the person telling the story actually was.

Anyway, despite all of that, this was creepy and twisty and turny and I had a fantastic time.
