How can a story about a young boy and his wolf become so dark?
Why do they build up strong and loveable characters, to kill them anyway?!

The previous book so our hero Torak at his lowest point. This time, we see him at his darkest point yet. When one of his friends dies (which he thinks is his fault), Torak goes on a quest for revenge.
Wolf and Renn don't even matter to him anymore. All he can think of is kill the one person who killed his friend...
Damn Torak... You turned from a young and innocent boy, into a vengeful avenger!

The antagonist of the story should have been a real badass in strength, but unfortunately he didn't show it very much. But luckily he handled as smart as all the Soul Eaters did before him.
There was only one thing that bothered me a lot...
Where the hell is Wolf? I thought his presence in this story was too little. I really hoped he would join Torak in the fights, but instead he handled in (sometimes) in the background to help him.
Plus, the heartbreaking moment when Wolf discovers Torak actually isn't a real wolf like he is...

A real heartbreaking story... Until you read the final chapter.
I don't know the right words to describe it without spoiling it. But is was so beautiful. It almost had me in tears... So, maybe this GIF can give you a hint.

So many deus ex machinas. But overall, another good installment of the Ancient Darkness Chronicles.

The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series continues with another action-packed installment. Torak has been branded as a Soul Eater by the evil Viper Mage and according to clan law he is cast out. Any person who sees him must kill him and he's not to get help from anyone. Torak, soul-sick and confused, journeys to the Lake where the Otter Clan lives and there he discovers the source of his illness- Seshru the Viper Mage. He knows he'll have to defeat her to save his own life and protect the lives of the people in the forest, but can he manage it on his own?
Once again, I was drawn in to Paver's rich descriptions of the land and Torak's quest for survival. You'll definitely want to read the other books first and I wish I had reread them because the action picks up right from where the third book left off. I love this series and I wasn't disappointed. I couldn't put it down!

On to the next book!

Another excellent entry in this series that "combines Stone Age anthropology with supernatural mythology"--Torak and his friend Renn set off to the frozen North to rescue his "packmate" (best friend who's not a human) Wolf. There's always lots of outdoor survival scenes and tense action in these books, plus animal behavior--the way Torak and Wolf "talk" in wolfspeak is really neat. The magical elements are also fascinating, as Torak once again must "spirit walk" in the body of a bird and even a polar bear in order to complete his quest. I especially love hearing Sir Ian McKellan narrate these on audiobook; mmmmmm!

I don't know why but I didn't really get into this book. I understand it must be hard to write emotion in 3rd person but I think it would be so much better in 1st person. What was going on in the book was dramatic but I just didn't get that
